    Generic AI System - Multi Unit Command, Squad, Formation & Tactical AI Framework 5.7 - 5.8 UPDATE - 5.8-5.7 - V1.0 UE5 READY

GenericAISystem gives UE5 projects a reusable, extensible gameplay AI framework for turning player or AI intent into coordinated commands, squads, formations, tactical assignments, and layered StateTree behavior.

    Documentation and Support

    Why GenericAISystem?

Single AI actors are usually manageable. The integration cost starts to climb when multiple units must share orders, group state, formation intent, tactical targets, and long-running behavior.

    • How do player orders, scripted actions, and AI decisions use the same command lifecycle?

    • How do units become squads with roles, capacity, shared state, and group-level commands?

    • How do formations guide units without replacing the movement system your project already owns?

    • How do high-level tactical decisions become validated assignments and concrete unit actions?

GenericAISystem provides the coordination layer between player or AI intent and the gameplay systems that execute it. This keeps command, squad, formation, targeting, and StateTree workflows connected without forcing the entire game into a prebuilt architecture.

    Best Fit For

    • Real-time tactics and squad-command games

    • Squad-based action, strategy, and RPG projects

    • Companion, party, patrol, and controllable-unit gameplay

    • AI-heavy projects that need multi-unit coordination rather than isolated behavior actors

    • Teams using StateTree, GameplayAbilitySystem, EQS, or project-specific movement and targeting logic across several gameplay layers

    • Projects that already own movement, combat, animation, or UI systems and need a reusable orchestration layer between them

    Key Features

Use one command system for player orders and AI decisions

Avoid rebuilding command queues and execution rules for player input, scripted actions, and AI decisions. The Command System gives them one lifecycle for validation, immediate or queued execution, insertion, cancellation, results, and pluggable execution—including StateTree-based execution. When different unit types receive the same high-level request, Command Intent resolution can translate it into the concrete command each unit knows how to perform.

Build squads with roles, composition, and shared behavior

Turn related units into coordinated gameplay groups instead of passing Actor arrays between systems. The Squad System manages membership, roles, capacity, formations, shared state, and squad-level commands; it can create or reorganize groups from live units, refill missing roles, and let StateTree react when squad composition changes.

Build reusable formations for different movement systems

Create reusable formation assets, assign units to weighted and tagged slots, switch layouts, and adapt destinations to navigation. The Formation System provides per-unit Movement Intent, then uses an extensible Driver mechanism to connect that intent to different movement solutions: an included Driver supports CharacterMovement, while projects can add Drivers for Mover or custom locomotion. Stackable modifiers can further adjust spacing, speed, facing, or tactical offsets without replacing the base formation.

Turn tactical goals into coordinated unit assignments

Avoid manually pairing every unit with every target as the battlefield changes. The Tactical Assignment System turns goals such as attack, defend, support, hold, or interact into validated unit-to-target work by combining reusable candidate sources, filters, scoring, allocators, sessions, target claims, and EQS inputs.

Organize persistent decisions and ordered work with StateTree Stack and Queue

Keep long-running AI modes separate from short, ordered tasks instead of growing one monolithic StateTree. StateTree Stack manages layered decisions, priorities, overrides, and restoration; StateTree Queue executes ordered plans with append, replace, completion, and exact-dispatch cancellation workflows.
